Chemical Processed Hair

Chemical processed means texture services that can be used to curl straight hair, straighten overly curly hair, or to soften coarse, straight hair and make it more manageable. Coloring is also a chemical service.

These processes cause a chemical change that alters the natural wave pattern of the hair. They include the following services: • Permanent waving • Relaxing • Curl re-forming, which we as cosmetologist call (soft curl permanents) and lay persons call Jerry Curls. The down side to these services are that they damage the hair structure by reconstructing the cortex.

Facts about chemical processed hair

Chemical texturizers and coloring raise the pH of the hair to an alkaline state in order to soften and swell the hair shaft. This is done in coloring to bleach and remove the color pigment from the hair or to change the color. In all other chemical processes this is done to reconstruct the hair strands. This action has to occur to open the cuticle layer so that the solution can reach the cortex layer, where restructuring takes place. It must be considered that Coarse, resistant hair with a strong, compact cuticle layer requires a highly alkaline chemical solution around the pH of 8.5 to 9. Porous, damaged, or chemically treated hair needs a less alkaline solution or over-processing will occur.

In order to understand how all this takes place, it is imperative to know that hair consist of Building Blocks. These Building Blocks are:

• Amino acids are compounds made up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

• Peptide bonds, also known as end bonds, are chemical bonds that join amino acids together, end to end in long chains, to form a polypeptide chain.

• Polypeptide chains are long chains of amino acids joined together by peptide bonds.

• Keratin proteins are long, coiled polypeptide chains.

• Side bonds are disulfide, salt, and hydrogen bonds that cross-link polypeptide chains together.

Once the disulfide bonds are broken by the chemical reaction of the solution used to reconstruct the hair, the hair can become dry, weak, and brittle to the point of breakage if over-processed or not properly cared for. You must remember that the cuticle layer is open during chemical processes. The cuticle layer is what keeps the hair healthy by trapping moisture into the hair strands.

How to care for chemical processed hair

All chemical processed hair requires special attention to prevent further damage to the structure of the hair. Using products that moisturizes and keep the cuticle layer closed to trap moisture, prevent frizz, and detangle is needed to stop breakage. A very effective remedy is to use products that are more natural than synthetic. Products that deposits vitamins, minerals, and nutrients back into your hair are more effective at restoring the integrity of your hair from the damages done by chemical services. CONDITIONING CHEMICAL PROCESSED HAIR

Conditioning is mandatory for chemically processed hair. Your hair needs moisture to soften and prevent breakage. Hair that is properly moisturized and conditioned will grow healthy if all the right amount of protein, minerals, and nutrients are added. Since your hair is damaged somewhat from chemical treatments, it would do your hair a lot of good to keep it moisturized with a good conditioner that has a lot of natural ingredients. Using products with harsh chemicals like sulfates (sulfates dry your hair) or parabens and more could agravate your hair and make the damage worse so please, use all natural products.

KERATIN AND PROTEIN TREATMENTS

Most people that have done chemical processes use keratin and protein treatments as a means of trying to correct their damaged hair. What most of them don't understand is that too much protein can make hair dry and brittle, which will damage it further. The best thing to do is use natural products that will add the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to your hair without over doing it. A really good natural shampoo, conditioner, and Leave in is all you need to maintaining healthy hair even after a chemical process.
